That's a good budget. Are you set on getting an all-in-one system?

Hey, now. What happens in Australia stays in Australia...
Yeah thinking maybe an amp and speaker package deal
Haha purchased**

Well, for that kind of money I'm sure Bose will have something.

But, for that same amount of money, you could get a real system.

Your choice.

Yeah htib pretty much
I don't understand why you would spend that kind of money to get an inferior system. It's not like it becomes more complicated because it comes in more boxes...

Tell you what, looking at the prices (not just Down Under, but in EU too), I'm sure glad the options/prices on this side of the pond make HT so much more accessible.

Ok, first thing, I am not endorsing any of the websites. Not being from Australia, I have no idea of their reputation or if the prices can be bettered. The links are simply to give you the product ideas.

Proper setup:
Player: Pioneer BDP440 Blu-Ray 3D Disc Player AU$396 shipped
Receiver: Pioneer VSX922 7.2 Channel AV Receiver AU$866 shipped
Speaker: Pioneer FS51PACK Speaker Pack with Subwoofer AU$995 shipped (If you can dig up the FS52 pack, it is hugely improved over the FS51 pack and I'd recommend getting that instead.)

HTIB setup:
I cannot recommend a HTIB with a clear conscience :p. The website from where I pieced the Pioneer setup has several HTIBs...

1) Buy the Ascends, Onkyo receiver and HSU/SVS sub
2) Take $5 and buy some blank stickers
3) Write Onkyo 6 times
4) Place a sticker over Ascend and HSU/SVS logos
5) ???
6) Profit!!

Better yet, take some of the leftover budget and buy a universal remote. Program it yourself. Something like a Logitech Harmoney that had the real simple UI. Then it won't make a difference what you get him.

All he has to do is push "watch TV" and the TV will turn on, receiver will turn on, cable box will turn on, and the receiver will switch to the proper input and sound settings. He wants to watch a BR movie? Push "Watch Movie" and the cable turns off, BR turns on, receiver switches to the right input, and he's off and watching a movie. Assuming you set everything up correctly (it's really easy honestly).

You have a golden opportunity with that budget to get him a system that will last him for many years and put a smile on his face every time he sits down in front of it. Don't waste that trying to make everything one brand.

Seconded. You can help him hook it up and once it's all working he won't care about brand names.
