i'm looking for a pre-pro or a receiver that has the following...

- hdmi switching (1.3a would be nice, but i'm not going to let that be a hang-up).
- pre-outs
- decent video capabilities
- and sounds good

amplification (in the case of a receiver) is unimportant, it's going to feed my existing amplifiers...

oh yea... cheaper the better... :) i don't want to go bottom of the line, but i also don't feel the need to spend 10 times as much for 1% improvement...

thanks in advance. i've read so many threads/forums/review sites/etc. that i don't know what to think anymore.

How much are you willing to spend? The Onkyo TX-SR805 seems to be something along the lines of what you want if you really want HDMI 1.3 and to get the newest stuff out there. Otherwise look at midline yamaha receivers or older denon models.

let's set the budget at $1000... i wouldn't mind spending less though...

and i'm not that hung up on the 1.3a... as long as it has decent video capabilities and sounds good, that's the primary need...

The onkyo 605 doesn't have pre-outs so that doesn't fall into the specs that are required. Just thought I would let you know.

If the 605 had preouts I would have gotten one long ago and paired it with an emotiva amp :),
Didn't know that. Thanks. I will edit my reply.;)

upconverting to hdmi is a plus... if that helps...

I think every receiver listed does that. Not 100% about the Yammy 661 but I know all the Denons and Onkyos should.

Doesn't the new Yammy RX-V1800 use the Reon chip for hdmi upconversion? That one is sexy too

it didn't look like the 661 did... it's hard to tell sometimes from reading the specs on these things...

hmmm...

assuming i stretch a few extra dollars...

that would make the choices that have been suggested so far (of those with all the "new toys" in this price range)...

tx-sr805
rx-v1800
avr-2808ci

the onkyo (besides having the advantage of actually being available) is a few hundred cheaper... the other 2 are about the same... i've owned all 3 brands at one time or another, and been pleased with them... in my mind, i've always graded denon/yamaha ahead of onkyo, but that could be a psychological thing...
