Most manufacturers recommend 4-6" above and 1-2" on each side. If you have the manual, see if it offers any recommendations.

Is it a dedicated Tuner? or a receiver? Receivers need airspace due to heat that is produced from the powersupply and amplifiers. Tuners are pretty passive (little heat produced) and will only need enough space to allow some air flow (an inch or two would usually be sufficient).

I would say if you have it in a completely enclosed space (door, sides, top, bottom, etc.) you already are suffocating it. I have seen more equipment die due to poor air circulation than any other single cause.

Some equipment can be stuffed into a cabinet with zero air flow for hours with no problem, but receivers are not one of those pieces of equipment.

That said - the manufacturer likely says in the manual exactly how much room you need.

Within my rack I have about 2 inchs, but it has full airflow top, bottom, front, back, and side to side.
