Ahhhhh! The world of “the right woofer!” Situation old Dahlquist DQM9’s no bottom end, but ported! Need new 10” drivers but not enough cubic inches

Need to change both 10” woofers: Today’s new woofer’s need more cubic space, so forget squeezing a new10” or upgrade to a 12” inch. Let’s say I do, but do you go with a cheap 40$-80$ From Parts Express or keep to some what of a quality like the German ones it already has, let’s say SB Accoustis sb34nrx75-6 12” 171$ or Seas Prestige cazgre4x 10” or a Peeless by Tymphany driver, all are cast framed not stamped. When buying woofers at $170 to 300$ (Let’s not forget crossovers, will the old ones even adapt ) or do you just start building a new box from scratch using old with new drivers? What do you feel about this everyone? Please I need your knowledge.

Since the physical and electrical properties of the woofers themselves and the enclosures physical dimensions (and the crossovers) are so intricately entwined, you might be better off with just adding a subwoofer to extend their range.

What's wrong with the 10" drivers in the speakers now? Or you just want better bass? If the latter I also would also look into a sub.

Thank you. Yes the spec’s on the crossovers are unknown I’m afraid. The tweeters are very nice and the midrange is good (400hz-3500khz ) I would love to reuse them even with a diy box I have a uncle that’s a woodworker. I also have a subwoofer 18” old velodyne ULD series 2. But it just malfunction and I have to take it in, I was using it in the set up? Broke my heart. The old stuff seems so solid compared to today’s gear, but they are 20 years old.... buy new or fix the old or DIY rebuild?

Still, what's wrong with the original drivers? Need cone repair? Surrounds replaced? Seriously not worth trying to rebuild them without all the t/s parameters for the various drivers if you add new bass drivers to the mix. Lots of good DIY kits out there for speakers and subs, tho.

My friend gave them to me, he blew (maybe) and rebuilt one of the woofers but it’s tighter and they are different sounding, I don’t know if something may have happened inside as well crossover damage? But the speakers have fuse’s in them hummmmm maybe the woofer fell off its stand and had to be repaired.

You could take the drivers out and see if there is any identification for the drivers to work with.

Maybe the company that made the drivers has been closed for years, but there’s a company in New York that would update the crossovers and rebuild the woofers the total was 400$ plus tax and shipping if I went that route- buying new is about the same to more money hard to decide. As for your question about rebuilding cone repair - I’m afraid I’m new to all this rebuilding knowledge (a beginner) so I don’t know enough to even properly answer that question I’m just a guy that has a pretty good ear and knows when somethings wrong or off, so you have to be patient with me lol, I’m still leaning all the HiFi lingo all of you use.

I'm trying to tell just what is wrong with the bass drivers, you may well have identified a problem, just trying to figure out what it may be. Is the cone torn or damaged? Is the surround (the foam/rubber that connects the cone to the frame) damaged? Does each of the bass drivers look identical? If you push in the driver by hand does it rub/scrape? If you've got someone that can actually add new drivers in the existing box and provide an appropriate updated crossover that may be a good way to go if they know what they're doing.

If damaged, the subwoofer route is the only option if your really in love the mid/tweeter and one that can cross very high smoothly. The dayton RS series would be one to consider.
