Well, this forum/website is where I have gotten the best, most realistic info on what I am looking for, so I figured I would throw this up for suggestions and comments before I buy...

The details...need to stay in a $1500 budget for speakers, sub, and 5.1 receiver for a mix of TV, movies, and music...floor standing speakers are out do to WAF, and the room is 14 x 11, open to a kitchen of the same size, total cubic feet of room with kitchen is about 2500...

I have narrowed it down to...

4 x Magnepan MMGWs and a MMGC - $900
1 x Yamaha Rx-V659 - $350
1 x Velodyne VX10 - $160

I still need to try to work a DVD player in there somewhere, so I may end up going a touch over budget...I listen to CDs and watch DVDs so rarely that it si not much of a concern.

I like clear, open sounding speakers, and upon the right deal I wouldn't mind buying used or refurbished. One of my main concerns is that I don't want the system to be a one sweet spot only set up, it needs to sound good when I entertain as well, which I know can be a concern with planers, but I have heard them in different applications and those fears were all but erased.

Ready? Go!

It's all about your ears and the speakers. If the MMGWs give you that "clear, open sound" better than others you have auditioned, go for it.

They are harder to drive, so volume could be an issue.

I am an owner of the Yammie HTR-5960 (the RX-V659 big box clone), and the Velo VX-10. For the money they are both great products.

Those magnepan's are a difficult load for most receivers. You might look around for a refurbished Yamaha RX-V2500 for a slightly better amp stage or budget to add a couple Behringer A500 amps if necessary.
