College student looking for a PAIR of bookshelf speakers for 50-150$ range. I don't really know any good models that would fit my needs.

- Casual listener
- Used mainly for hard thumping music, and movies.
- 50-150$ price range

Looking forward to suggestions!

Any space considerations? If not, going with something like a party speaker will be best for hard thumping movies and music. You'll lose some of the clarity and overall sound quality that all of us on this forum treasure, but if these arent your primary considerations, don't worry about it. Here are some recommendations:

If size is a consideration, get a computer speaker system. Klipsch and Logitech make systems that will go thump and are around your price range (Klipsch has the better sub).

Check BestBuy.com for:
Wharfedale Zaldek 600
JBL Northridge N28
Athena Technologies AS-B1:
Not your best thump speaker but BY FAR the nicest here (and probably the
nicest near this price point).

Check CircuitCity.com for:
Pioneer SH253BK
Polk R15 (more in the category of the Athena, but go with Athena if it comes down to it)

Sorry, forgot to say that my best recommendation is to buy a pair like the Athenas or Polks now and save until you can afford a sub. Yamaha and JBL have some decent budget models. This will give you the most sound for your money.

thanks for the recommendations. and yes, space is a priority since i'll be putting them in my dorm, and most likely on my desk. most people have recommended the athena speakers, and i may go with those unless people come up with something else.

The Athenas are one of the best in that price range.

There are many DIY kits for $150 ir less that will definately suit your need, but there is a fair amount of assembly required.

Since they will be on a desk, make sure you can listen to them near-field without headaches. Sometimes the smallest difference at 10-15ft can make insane differences when your head is about 3ft from them.

That never stopped me! My dorm room desk is covered with equipment, no room for books. Audio before space and comfort!

The Polks are about 80 for the pair at Circuitcity and the Athenas are about 130 at Bestbuy. I read the reviews on the Athenas, but is there a 50 dollar difference in the two? I would be using them primarily as fronts for a home theatre. Eventually making them the rears when I get the money to afford some superb towers. They will be replacing crappy JVC 5.1 fronts that I got about 2 years ago.

Only your ears can determine if there's a $50 price difference or not.

This is very true...I listened to the athenas today and of course there was no one in Bestbuy who could help me out. They did sound very good though.

I went to Circuit City and after waiting for about 20 mins the kid put the Polks on and they were blown. I asked if he could hook up a pair that were new b/c I wanted to buy them and he talked about the service plan (the service plan? The speakers are 40 bucks!)

The re-research continues tommorow.

I did some looking around online today at the R15's, found good reviews. Thinking of picking up a pair myself.
