Afforable 1080p Scaler

Hi. So as far as I can gather there is a device called a scaler that will convert any video signal to 1080p.

What I would like is: The HDMI coming out of my receiver goes into this mystery box, gets converted to 1080p, and then hdmi connects it to the monitor.

I think this is what a HDMI scaler is. What I can't figure out is why are DVD players for 70$ upscale to 1080, and this device that I want ranges in price from 300-many thousand.

So can someone inform me, or point me to a product that will do what I want for a good price?

Thanks,
Chip

I'm not aware a 1080p scaler in a 70 dollar dvd player. If there was one. I would question it's capabilities. A truly good scaler would need some serious processing power and probably generate a lot of heat. Most of the DVD ones I think only do 1080i. Though some may cheat to get to 1080p. But from an economic standpoint. Bulk buying will always bring better prices. There is low demand for what you are talking about and so you will be paying for the engineering and research that went into building it.(kind of like the 1st generation of any product.) My suggestion is that you look into a DIY. I don't see that kind of project taking long as long as you can hunt down the parts. Some Soldering and maybe a little bit of programming and it could be done.

Call me crazy it's ok.

I think the best bang for the buck right now is the DVDO Edge. it isn't a end-all-be-all device, but it's pretty dang good and can help you adjust some of the picture qualities. It can be had for $500-600. If you want to go $2500+ then there are some different directions I would take, but I get from your post that isn't the direction you were leaning.

Get a good Onkyo upconvertor

... Or get the great Onkyo TX-SR876 upconvertor for $989 and get some video switching and audio amplification thrown in for free :D

It uses a HQV Reon-VX upsacler.

Good luck!

That's not a bad thought either. How much PQ tweaking can you do with that Onkyo?
You can control both settings of contrast and brightness for each of RGB, in addition to gamma controls, and have separate settings for night vs day viewing, and in fact do all of that in multiple ways for even the same source. You can also apply three different types of NR, being mosquito, random, and block, as well as edge enhancement.

While it's better in these regards than any other comparably priced receiver, a stand alone still wins. The DVDO is the only thing anywhere near the price point that I know of.

If anyone sees a Radiance XD selling for less than $2k, wouldya PM me? :p

I'm glad it's ok. You're crazy!

But I really wanted him to go with DIY route. I mean for 500 he can get a much nicer setup lol.
Really? Have you looked at the features of the DVDO Edge? Do you really think you can trump that unit?

BTW, I've been led to believe that the scaling is not as hard as the deinterlacing (fields from separate points in time to come together as one).

Yeah, I figured it wouldn't be cheap. I was hoping otherwise. That's why my receiver was 400 or so less than the next step up.

So lsiberian, do you know where to find a kit?

And to the rest: anyone have an opinion on this?

And what should I read to learn enough to decide what is worth my time?
