Hi Guys,

Im a complete newbie. I did a search, and read the 14 reviews but couldn't find a definitive answer- all the threads had room sizes that were apartments and I live in a house with a large living room. I need advise on speakers to purchase for my onkyo tx-sr605; my setup is as follows:

Sony Bravia flat screen
Sony DVD
XBOX 360

Speakers are for 85% movies/ 15% music. Looking at preferably floor standing since im not worried about space, and i heard floor standers give a fuller sound.

Some of the ones i have been looking at have been the polk audio rti10/ rti8, psb, infinity, monitor audio- which one of these are good choices OR can you recommend a better choice. Like i said I dont know much, and med school is taking up any time (and sleep).

Budget is around 1k (max).

Thanks so much!

thanks abb-

maz- just looking for a pair of floor standers. What does everyone think of the Polk Audio RTi10- its a discontinued model on clearance and i can grab the pair at 500.00 with a PSW10 sub. But debating it over the new Polk audio RTIA7- the sounds are much richer.

Whats your budget for speakers?

Also, bring along a list of your CDs/DVDs that you know very well from a sound point of view and a note pad so you can take notes about the different speakers you'll want to audition. The notes should include likes, dislikes about each speaker. Make notes on how the bass, mids, and highs sound. Bass fast and tight or loose, flabby and 1 notish? How deep does it go? Mids sound life like? Male voices sound naturual or do they sound chesty and artificially bassy? Trebles nice and smooth with lots of detail ? Does the treble sound harsh, fatiguing or does it sound smooth and inviting? Little things like like this that you should note down.

Speakers too look at;

PSB, Paradigms, Def Techs, Energy, Totem, DynaAudio, Polk, Mirage, Athena's, Klipsch...

Let us know how you're making out.

His budget is around $1K...

3dB gave you a very good list of speakers to audition. Not a fan of Klipsch, but for a large room they work well; whatever Klipsch you get, don't get SLX's they sound really awful in a large rooms. Athenas can be found at good prices. My preference is PSB, but that is because I own a set of their Image series. Actually my preference would be a Monitor Audio Gold or Platinum system, but at this time that is out of my price range. BTW, Monitor Audio Bronze are in your price range. If you go with floorstanders forget about the sub for now, save $500-$700, and get a nice sub later on.

PSB and Monitor Audio are my favorite at the moment. Try and audition some of the speakers already suggested as they're all good.

There has been some good choices listed.

The Polk RTi's are a good choice, I have not heard the new series from Polk so I can't compare.

Note to self: Stay off of Salk's website.

This is probably the most beautiful speaker I've ever seen, I have enough room on a CC and Salk is about 2 hours away from me. It would be so easy...too easy...

Hey guys,

Thanks for the help. I've debating, i've decided to audition the Polks just cause of the price- 2 RTi10's with sub for 500.00.

Currently I have everything setup, and the sound isnt the same as it was in the showroom, so gonna go back and look at a couple of things. Any ideas?

Will let you know how things turn out!

Careful, audition well...Have seen many people here writing about what a POS sub that Polk is, and how they could have gotten something better than the RTI speakers. Don't be fooled by pricing.
