advise on a cd, sacd, or dvd-a player

I need some advise on a good player for audio cds. I have a budget around a grand, give or take a couple hundred. I have been shopping and checking out the Denon 2910 as it is a combo unit. I have not read enough on improvements to jump up to the 3910. Integra has a DPC - 8.5 that is a combo unit but I have not had much luck with Onkyo products. My main goal is for good audio, cd mainly, sacd or dvd-a a plus if there is a combo player out there.
The next question is do I get a combo unit that will do the sacd and dvd-a or just a cd player? Is there a cd player that sound good in this price range.

I have a Yamaha CDC 665 for audio and a Toshiba 3109 for dvd. Both these players seem to be too metalic or have sharp edges at higher volumes. I have read the threads in the last couple of pages and looked at the shootout for the dvds. Not too much about the sound quality, mostly pictures (have not upgraded that side yet, waiting for the TV to die).
Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated.
Thanks, Wiz.

for a good quality universal player (DVD-V, CD, SACD, DVD-A), I recommend looking at Marantz or Denon. A few months ago when I was looking for a new player those were the two brands that I narrowed down to. I chose the Marantz DV-6400 - it plays all formats quite well. It's also at a great price point: $550.

If you want a player that will do only CD, then you will definitely have no problem finding a very good one in your price range. I have looked at Denon, Marantz, and Rotel and was very impressed with each.

I'm holding out for the Yamaha DVD-S2500. For $699 MSRP you get SACD/DVD-A, plus a lot of video bells and whistles. It should be shipping in Jan, but I've seen one site say they have them in stock now. The Denon 2910 is another good choice in that price range, from what I've read here.

You will need an amp that has the 5.1 analog inputs to get the SACD/DVD-A. And, of course, six more interconnects!

I had the Yamaha DVD-S1500 for a few days and the SACD audio was fantastic. I returned the unit though. I didn't like the remote and the DVD fast forward/reverse was not responsive enough for me. That and it's a skinny unit, which some like, some don't. Turns out I don't.
