Hey all, I need some help picking out a decent Reciever & speaker setup for my new TV & BD player, This is all new to me, the last time I went through this was like 10 years ago (or more) when I bought a Proscan 36" tube TV, & a Onkyo HRT-520 HTIB setup with a Onkyo 6 disk DVD/CD player.

Last month I bought a Samsung PN50A650 TV with a Samsung BD-2500 bluray player. Now I want to upgrade my audio system & need some help.

Been doing alot of research for the last couple of weeks & have narrowed my reveiver down to these chioces:

Yamaha RX-V765
Can get this for $599.00 @ newegg, but its pre-order, not sure when available.

Denon AVR 1909/789
Same price as Yamaha 765, but from what I've read its a real pain in the arse to set up/operate??

Yamaha RX-V663
$499.00 same basic thing as 765 but fewer HDMI ports

I'm thinking the Yammie 663, but if the 765 was in stock or will be in the next week or so I would go with it for only $100.00 more.

Now, what speakers do you pair up with this receiver. I'd really like to go with Kplisch, I have a 2.1 set hooked to my computer (home built kick *** PC) but there just too expensive. I saw these Energy 5.1 Take Classic Home Entertainment System & am wondering how they sound & would work with a yamaha receiver, I looked at Polk, & Yamaha but not sure where to go here. I'm thinking either the Energy 5.1, or buy 1 piece at a time klipsch, Polk, Yamaha, Etc.

I reall don't know here, just need some advice suggestions. Point me in a direction so I can do some more research.

Should I buy 1 or 2 pieces at a time? or be done with it an get the 5.1 system??

Yamy V663 is a good bet...a lot of discussiono on the new xx5 series and some shortcuts Yamaha took. Until the indepth reviews come out, those questions will remain.

If you are considering a partial surround set up, consider a 3.0 system where you get matching L-C-R speakers. In this market, by the time you are ready to go from 2.0 to 3.0, the center channel may not be available in the same speaker series as you L-R mains.

If you like the Klipsch "loaded horn" sound, then consider the BIC Acoustech line of horn speakers at a much more agreeable price.

other deals available now are Energy "C" series speakers

500 for a receiver means you should be spending at least 1500 on speakers.

Questions to ask. Does your blu-ray player decode Dolby HD and DTS HD?

Are you good with wood? Or would you like to be? DIY and you will get the best for your budget.

If so I suggest you look at a receiver without those features like a Marantz 4002 or a HK AVR 247(it works) Both options are significantly cheaper than the yamaha and will net you equal performance imo.

Compromising like this will leave you around 250 to 350 for your remaining budget. That's enough for a nice external amp if you need the extra power or if you don't A KEF iQ5

I suggest you check out KEF iQs I think they have great sound and they present a very wide sound stage. Plus you can pick up KEF eggs for surrounds and they will create a seamless sound stage if WAF is a concern.

A common mistake in Audio is buying an overpriced receiver/amp per speakers. If you spend 500 on speakers you shouldn't be spending 500 on an amp. You might as well flush 300 dollars down the toilet. Speakers matter the most because they make the sound. If your budget is 1000 dollars. Your receiver should be around 200 and your speakers 800. 80% of your budget should go to speakers. They are the part you can keep forever. :D

This is a great package for the price if you want surround sound now(if you are primarily a movie watcher I suggest that route) and all you need to do is add a good sub. Do go and find a dealer that sells them and listen to the speaker before you buy them though.

My DVD player does decode Dolby True HD, & DTS HD, & will want a receiver that will produce these formats. I did look at Marantz & HK also. considered them both. I do like the marantz and will reconsider it.

I do have my own woodworking shop, and I'am pretty good with wood, just never thought about buliding my own speakers. Will definatly look into this. Could be very fun & challenging. Wonder where to find plans/designs for cabinets & speaker placement?? Guess I'll be doing more googling.

If you sign up they usually email you when it's available.

I'am signed up at newegg, have bought a couple thousand dollars worth of computer parts from them over the last couple of years. However the 765 does not have an auto notify link, its only pre-order. I called them 2 days ago to see if they had an ETA, & they did not know, just said they will update site when they are in house.

DIY is the way you should go.

Don't even waste your time with commercial speakers. I'm not a woodworker(learning) but i've loved building my Madisound Recession buster kits. And you can get really nice drivers if you have a good budget.

TLS Guy has a lot of very good designs. If you are on a tight budget Madisound

Drmarksays.com is a very good resource.

The tech talk area of parts-express is also very good.

For subs build two of the Infinity Kappa Perfect MidVQ stickied on the DIY section of the sight.

I suggest you get the Marantz 4002 or HK 247 AVR. I just got the HK and it is excellent with music. I've had no issues with it so far.

Since your player decodes the formats your receiver doesn't need too. Ones that do cost 200 more with similar quality sound.

Building your own speakers is a lot of fun and very rewarding. A couple sites sell kits that just require you to build your own cabinets (some kits may also require you to solder the crossover).

Two of the more popular kits out there right now are the Recession Buster and the Recession Destroyer :D

http://www.madisound.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=8525

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-700&FTR=recession destroyer&CFID=6716405&CFTOKEN=96793482

Both sites offer a lot of different kits to fit nearly any need and budget. I built a pair of the Recession Buster speakers, and I feel confident that they would compare to any commercially available speaker in the $200 to $300 range.

Here's a couple websites with documented builds and plans from experienced speaker builders.

http://us.geocities.com/cc00541/
http://www.zaphaudio.com/

Some of these projects are not for beginners, and don't have the convenience of being available as a kit.

Edit:
Here's the link to the Parts Express Tech Talk forum, they hide it way at the bottom of their site.

Personally, I’m a big fan of building a better system over time if you can’t afford what you want upfront. Do you have a budget in mind for the speakers/sub? How large is your space?

Yamaha does provide a little better bang/$$ than say Denon or Marantz feature wise.

Ascend Acoustics has a B-stock blowout right now and a CMT-370/CMT-370C combo would be a nice upgrade for the front L/C/Rs for starters. The next upgrade would be the sub.

Yeah but he's a wood worker. he would be silly not to build his own cabinets. He can choose the color, material and do it really well.

There is a build of zaphs on P-E that are the example of an amazing build.

Guy built a fortress for an enclosure. Though it was Overkill IMO. He seemed to have fun and got carried away.:)

So, your saying if my Bluray player does Dolby True HD & DTS HD any HDMI receiver will pass this sound thru to the speakers without any sound loss?

I thought the receiver had to have these capabilities also?

Never mind, I just read the stickies
