Hi everyone, this is my first post and I need some advice on my setup at home. I am in a position to do some upgrading and I've been tossing around some ideas but I am not sure what would be best.

My living area is about 3000 cu. ft. but it is open to the right surround area (foyer/front door) and rear left is open to the kitchen/dining area. All three areas double the volume of the room and I have 10' ceiling. My main question is should I get in-ceiling speakers for my surrounds and rear speakers??? If so should those speakers be "directional" speakers, those with angled tweeter and mid-range drivers? Since the wall location of the right surround and rear left is non-existent and I don't like the ceiling attached speakers, I am thinking the in-ceiling option is my best solution.

But if I ever wanted to go with a Atmos setup, would overhead in-ceiling speakers be a good solution or would Atmos enabled speakers work (thinking Def Tech Bp-9080x if I got this route)???

I am just trying to think ahead and into the future about what the end result I want, which is a 7.2.2 setup. But for now I am ready to go to a 7.1 setup. I just upgrade my sub to a SVS PC-2000 and would like to add another in the future if space is available. My L/C/R speakers are currently Polk CS II and Monitor 40s which I can live with until I am able to purchase full range towers and big center.

In a large open room like this, surround speakers can be challenging to do and ceiling speakers are an option, although they are not a great option. You say the rear left and right open, do you have any side walls near your listening area? How about the back wall? It sounds like you are trying to configure 7.1. If you can get away with aestheically speaker stands always work well in open room. Aa for the atmos, DO NOT do in ceiling surrouds and atmos enabled speakers... Your sorround channels will be coming from the ceiling but you ceiling channels will be coming from the floor and reflected off the ceiling... If you have to do yiur surrounds in ceiling, cest la vi it will woek better then nothing, however if thats the case, then just forego the atmos.
