Hey guys, haven't posted in a while, but since I did last, ive finally managed to get a system going, and was wondering what your thoughts were and how I can improve it. Im running a Yamaha Rx-v557 reciever(ive heard I made a mistake purchasing this, but I got a GREAT deal on it). My mains are brand new Klipsch RB-35's, which i purchased after I blew a pair of old Klipsch SB-2's. The SB-2's are under warranty so ill have those back in a few days, thinking of putting them in as rears. Finally, I have a Jamo 10inch sub which sounds decent for the money i suppose, but I will no doubt want to improve. So basically what im thinking, and where I need your advice is in adding a center channel, maybe and amp? and a better or second sub (prolly not gonna do this for a while though). I've read great things about the Klipsch RC-35 for a center channel, and it would be cool to have all the same brand, ive been very happy with klipsch to this point. It should be noted that this is for about 60/40 music/movies use. I listen to mostly rap, and I listen pretty damn loud (college student at Notre Dame). So, Ill prolly have 1000-1500 to spend and improve this system in the near future, where should I put my money? Thanks alot in advance for your advice...

Get some good subs, SVS and not as a second sub. You can also use that center channel.

Sick? You think the SVS is sick? Why is that? It is an exceptional sub for the price.

If your budget allows it and you like Klipsch, the 15" reference sub is absolutely insane in terms of output. I will be posting a pic soon of two of these in a theater and I am here to tell you that it was INSANEly loud. I too am in college and love stuff cranked. Check this out.

im working with around 1,000-1,500 for upgrading, so that can be for only a sub (powered i guess) or an amp and sub, cause i may need an amp for my speakers as well, doubt my yahama rv-x557 can handle how loud im gonna be playing music and movies, eventually im sure ill have both. some have told me to get an amp first to be safe then the sub, but if the sub is powered i guess it doesnt really matter. The room is about 24*12*8

"Sick", as in "off the hook", as in "totally friggen sweet", I'm guessing. :)

Besides, I don't think there are any reviews out there that claim an SVS sub to be weak or lame on the low end.

Not you, Mtry!

In any event, there is only one sub for you in your pricerange that will outperform just about anything on the market (other than do-it-yourself).
www.svsubwoofers.com/subs_pb12_plus_2_rosewood.htm

If you have room for two, may I suggest two of these (also fits in your budget).

Now that would be a great face off - two 15" Titanic MKIII's versus one PB12-ISD 2.   The massive spl versus the depths of hell.

so would that box svs sub that you suggested be even better than the biggest of the powered cylinder svs sub? I think im pretty set on svs, so which is the best direction to go? also if I get one of these subs, i'd be able to run it fine through my lower end yahama reciever with no problems right? (maybe ill get another amp for the speakers)

The box sub buckeye rexcommended, the PB12-ISD, is a Powered Box (Get it, PB = Powered Box), which means it has an internal amplifier. Your receiver would only be sending the audio signal to the box (via pre amp sub out, also called lfe out), and then the box adds power and amplifies the sound. That's why it will have its own ac plug in. I'm pretty sure the only box that isn't internally amplified it the most expensive one (Can't remember the name, sorry), although I may be wrong. And the cylinders are about 60/40 passive/powered i think. For a college room though, an svs box sub can double as an end table!

Was it really necessary for 3 people to quote mtry and correct him? Come on people, read the entire post first!

If you blew your Klipsch, that should tell you...

Your amp is what you need to upgrade. I can't speak for the Klipsch other than the Heritage series (Klipschorn, LaScala, Bell, Cornwall). I'm an old fart in comparison to you. I own Cornwalls. Have for 20 years. If you run clean sound into them, you will not blow them... at least you shouldn't. I have a Crown Microtech 1200 amp. It's a PA amp. It's clean, and it cranks clean. I don't listen to rap, so maybe the Crown is so clean, it would make rap sound lame. It seems rappers like to hear the paper of the woofer flutter pretty hard before they get impressed. Anyway, I'd shoot for a clean amp before you waste more money on speakers. You can and will always blow great speakers with a dirty loud amp.
