Advice on overcoming poor sound quality

Hello from a forum newbie!

I joined up in the hope of getting some advice on a problem that's been driving me nuts for a few months now.

The sound quality of my stereo system's CD playback has been gradually deteriorating since the summer time. Strangely, the problem seems to be at its worst during the middle tracks of any given disc, while not quite so bad at the start and end. The problem manifests itself as fairly low level distortion across all frequencies. Clear piano, guitar or voice signals are coming across quite rough, and overall the depth of sound is just not there. I've checked all my wiring to make sure everything is OK (seems to be fine). Sound playback via other components (DVD, cable, and tuner) seem OK. The problem is definitely restricted to CD playback.

My system includes a Cambridge Audio D100 CD player (less than 1 year old), a Yamaha RX-V520RDS receiver(about 2.5 yrs old), a pair of Heybrook HB1's as my main speakers, Mordaunt Short MS10's as my back speakers, and a Gale Centre 20 as a subwoofer. I have good quality cabling and connectors between all components. My listening habits include everything from prog and jazz-rock to singer/songwriter to classical - right across the range. Listening volume tends tends to be low to medium.

So what am I looking for? Suggestions please! Anything at all - obvious or not so obvious - that I might try in order to sort this out. Does this sound like a common problem? Why might the effect be worse at a CDs midpoint? Are there any known problems with any of my components (particularly the newer parts like the CD and the amp)? Does it sound as if there is in fact a problem with my CD player, or perhaps with the CD input channel on my amp?

Hope someone out there can help out!

Well,

...for starters I would swap out the Cd player. If the problem goes away, I'd strongly suspect the CD player.

I agree with markw change out the player and see if the problem persists. If this does not help maybe look at the speakers or receiver.

Cheers,
Glenn
