Hello,
I am looking for a sub for my family room. (18X22X11) with 3 walls and is open on one side. My budget is $400 USD max 500USD. I know its not a lot of money for a sub but i have to live with it. Right now i am getting a KLIPSCH R112SW 12 INCH POWERED SUBWOOFER for $445.
My other speakers which i am very close to buying are are Klipsch RP-250 (LR) RP-44c (C) and RP-240S (RR, RL)

Is there anything better i can do at this price range?
I also have a crate spa 1400 stereo amp that i am not using. Is there an option to buy something passive in my price range and connect it to the sub to get better sound?

Thanks

Read Morgan Audio's thread about the RSL Speedwoofer 10S. I think the three subs mentioned there are your real competitors.
If you want a sub for both HT and music, are willing to swap the tuning set-ups when going between the two, and don't mind a pretty large sub, the Hsu is probably your best bet.

If size is an issue, the Emotiva may not be a bad compromise if you are just as worried about HT as music.

I am primarily a music guy, so if size didn't matter, I think the Hsu in sealed mode is probably the best bet. I am lazy enough be content not having the deepest bass for HT, so I would generally leave it in the sealed configuration. However, it is a plus that I could reconfigure it for deep HT bass for a "special event" or special movie.
As a music guy, and, if size did matter, I would go with the RSL Speedwoofer.

For your room size calculation, you need to include the volume of the apace beyond the "open wall" which make it sound like you have a pretty large volume. Reality check - $400 won't get you a pressurized room, but in a similar situation, I have been pretty happy with "inadequate" subs as long as I'm not trying to play at reference levels.

Thanks for your feedback... How easy is it to change the setup on the HSU?
Given that we do 70% music and 30% movies should i go HSU/RSL/Monolith/Emotiva?

Not sure how often you'd change it actually. I found I left my HSU in the output config (more musical) rather than extension, even with movies. My room at the time was quite large as well and the sub wasn't able to fully handle it. In output mode it was able to keep up and sound good as Kew mentioned, as long as I didn't try to push it to the limit, it was fine like that.

Very easy to change the Hsu configuration. All you do is either put in or take out the port plugs and flick the EQ switch on the amplifier panel to match the port's status. Takes about 15 seconds.

Yep, I was actually going to say spend a bit more if you intend to stick with one only. If you can budget for a second one down the road, save a little now and do that.
