Advice for music, non-home theater

I'm going to wire my dining room and kitchen with ceiling speakers and wanted some advice on the type of component that I should buy. It will be for music only and I don’t need audiophile quality, but something good. Should I buy a cheap receiver and CD player, or a “mini-system” and hook up the ceiling speakers to it? Any advice would be appreciated.

If I buy the Yamaha RX-V4600 and want to attach speakers in two other rooms, do I need a seperate amp in each of the additional rooms? Can I just run the speakers from the main receiver and put volume controlls in the other rooms (or use the A/B switch)? (I don't need good quality in the other rooms) . Also, can anyone recommend a radio frequency remote that won't break the bank. Any advice is much apprecaited.

I noticed there were no replies to your previous thread. Did you or are you still planning on the 4600. I think you're also putting speakers in a bathroom. Were you still planning on running anything off the 4600s zones?

Holy crap you have a good memory. I'm getting either the 4600 or one of the new denons for the home theater, and I'm going to use the mutil zone for outside and the office. This will be for the dining room and kitchen (I bought BIC's for the bathroom and outdoor). I have a crap load of equipment to buy, so I'm tryig to figure out what's the best way to do it all.

Trying to get audio throughout the house with minimal cost can be quite daunting. Let's get this straight. You have 5 other areas (Bath, Office, Outside, Kitchen, & Dining room) where you want audio. Can any of them be combined so that they form 2 zones; ie. the first 3 and last 2. If so, then a 3 zone receiver with separate amp might work. If not then perhaps a separate system as you asked may be needed. You can get a decent stereo receiver with A/B speaker outs and a 5-disc changer at jr.com for about $200.
