advantages/disadvantages of having A/V equipment in a closet

I have a large closet on the other side of my living room wall where my av gear is. I've been thinking about putting the receiver, blu-ray, dac, and cable box in there and wiring through the wall for some time now. Not sure how the RCA wall plates will affect sound quality. i would probably just run the speaker and sub cable through a wall plate. i would also need a IR repeater.

Any insight will be appreciated.

If you don't want to use wall plates (and I don't know of anyone who would want to add 8 connection points in their signal chain), several companies (Vanco, Leviton, OnQ, etc) make plates that are either a round hole (Midlite) or what's called a 'nose plate' (kind of looks like a nose when you look at it from the side). Any cabling needs to be rated for in-wall use (CL2) or you'll need to use some kind of conduit if you want to satisfy the electrical code.

How do you want to control the various devices- using all of the remotes, or a universal? You can use an IR repeater, but the RF remote extenders work far better and at least some of the IR emitter ports are assignable.
