This was an interesting film that I had not heard of before. It had a number of very good reviews, so I decided to Netflix it. It isn't an Oscar contender IMO, but it had some very good concepts. It does take a hard look at what makes people who they are, meaning the things that happen to you and the decisions you make as a result of them make a person who they are. It also touches on belief systems and how people of different backgrounds deal with each other, as well as how once things hit the web, they take on a life of their own (the story within the story goes viral). The interactions are very good and the story is intense at times. Though overall it is a bit slow to develop, it kept me interested. There is a little "time jumping" where the story goes back and forth to different points in the past so that you get bits and pieces of the story, but once it fleshes out it becomes more clear. I felt the script presented a lot of good concepts but didn't fully deliver on all of them. It sort of touches on too many things while telling the story and that sort of dilutes it a bit. I can't tell you too much of the story, because it is some of the reveal that gives it legs; I had an idea of what was going on, but what it turned out to be was a bit different than expected and I found that interesting.
The acting was very good, but the script could have been better for some of the characters IMHO; in other words, some of the actions weren't believable even though they were acted well. The teen character I felt did a great job and would have been even better if the script was more true to how a real teen would have acted/reacted IMO. His uncle, Scott Speedman (Underworld) did an excellent job as well and really was the best performance of this film IMHO.
It has a DTS HD track that wasn't put to the task really. It sounds great, but it isn't an action flick. Video looked great through most of it, only a few shots here and there looked a little grainy.
3.5 out of 5. Worthy of renting.
