adding speakers to a set ??

Hi all, couple of questions,, just purchased a modest system ( was going to get a HTIAB ) but after reading a lot of the very helpful and useful info that I found in here, I went a totall different route. ( denon amp, denon DVD, and athena speaker system )
( also, I understand that this may already be here in a post somewhere, and I have looked, believe me, but like a lot of people, I could probably trip over it and not see it, sorry )
My questions are : 1) I have an older set of tower speakers still in my living room, my new front speakers are sitting on them,,
- would it do any damage to my amp if I hook the old ones up to my b speaker hookup and play both a & b at the same time ?
- by hooking up both sets, would this throw off the new system ? make them out of synk so to speak ?
- finally, if they do not throw off anything,,, would I be gaining anything by doing this ? better sound, or any advantage ?

any help would be greatly app. !!
thanks

The A and B channels on you receiver come from the same amp. It's no different then hooking 2 speakers to 1 set of binding posts. The amp's load wil now be 4 ohms from 8 (assuming both the Athena and tower are 8 ohm speakers.)

As far as the sound, usually it doesn't sound that good. I tried it awhile back and it was gross (different speakers).

If your amp isn't a high current design, I highly recommend not doing this, as it could cause serious damage. Even with high current, its still hard on the amp, and it might shut off in high SPL, or long term use.

Hope this helps,

Or, if you still like your old speakers and want to enjoy them from time to time, perhaps your receiver can select A or B speakers without both, then you only have one set on line without the impedance issues.
