I have a yamaha rx777 two channel reciver which I don't belive has a sub out. But my Yamaha dvd c750 does. This is a 100% music set up. Can I attach a sub right to the universal player?

What type of I/O does the sub have?

If your receiver has preamp outs, you should be able to attach a sub with a right and left line level input with no problems.

Likewise, many subs have left and right speaker level inputs as well. These also can be used with your receiver.

Ss for connecting the sub directly to your DVD player, some do if they have analog outputs. Check your manual for this but understand that it still won't have the control options you would otherwise realize from the other methods mentioned. ...such as volume that tracks the rest of your system.

so you are saying I could attach the sub as the B speakers?

Yes, if the sub has speaker inputs (or sometimes called "high level inputs"), you can connect it up the sub as B speakers.

Some subs have high level outputs too. So you connect receiver to sub as A speakers, then the speakers to the sub.

Here's an example of the back panel of Hsu STF-2

so what is the advantage of going Rec>sub>speakers over Rec>sub
Rec> Speakers

Would I have to fiddle with the impedance switch at the back that also has me confused.

Advantage: You don't use up your B speaker outputs.

You shouldn't have to change the impedance unless your speaker's specs specificially say 4 ohm nominal.
