Add Amp or Replace My AVR?

Here is the story...I am preparing to upgrade my speakers to some Rockets or Ascends or such and I have an old JVC RX-1028VBK AVR.

I was originally thinking I would upgrade my AVR to a Yamaha RX-V659, but now I am wondering if adding an amp like the Emotiva LPA-1 might be a better option.

My only complaint with the JVC is audible hissing when approaching reference level volume during movies.

What's the concensus? Add amp or replace my AVR?

Amplification choice depends on the speakers they are driving. Choose your speakers first and then get back to us for amplification recommendations. In case it matters, my rule of thumb is 65% of your total audio budget goes to the speakers.

I agree with nick, with the speakers you listed there are some serious differences in efficiency between the model's,you should pick which exact model's your thinking about.

Im also wondering about this audible hiss you speak of,i dont think ive ever heard any amp or reciever hiss when it runs out of gas or clips, you might have a problem within the recievers preamp/processor.
