Adcom or Luxman Amp?

I have the luxury of coming across lots of used equipment from my fathers clients that is being thrown out. I always save it because nothing is usually wrong with it, other then it is "old". I have been using a Luxman M-117 Amp with my system for years, but recently acquired 5 Adcom GFA-555 Amps that were once again, being thrown out. The luxman sounds excellent now, but I am wondering if I should think about replacing it with one of the new adcoms....

Which amp is better is basically what I am trying to find out. Thanks for your help.

I have no clue, but is your dad looking to adopt a 44 yr old slightly balding but otherwise fairly well kept orphan?

What's the power rating on the Adcom and the Luxman? Speaker impedance and sensitivity? Have an 5.1 or more setup?
Have room for the 5 Adcoms?

My experience with Adcom has been nothing but great. I've a 545 for years. I've known that Luxman has been out there for years but haven't heard their equipment. If you decide to throw out the Adcom's I'd be happy to give you my mailing address. :D

Um... actually ive got more of a 4.1 system I suppose you would call it. There is no center channel, which I know is not good, but the system was origonally for music... not for home theater but I am now phasing it to a home theater. So any suggestions for that would be appreciated.

Currently I have a Carver Pre-Amp which goes into the amp, which outputs to the sub, and a 4 station speaker switch. What do I need to get/do in order to make it into a 5.1 system? Thanks.

And here is the stuff you asked for:
Adcom
200 Watts per Channel into 8 Ohms. 325 WPC into 4 Ohms, and capability to drive 2 Ohm loads. Bridged mono: 600 Watts per channel into 8 Ohms, 850 Watts per Channel into 4 ohms
Luxman
400 Watts 2 Channel Power Amplifier

The luxman seems to have very little information regarding its specs available. I think I am probably gonna just hook up the adcom and see which one performs better and just stick with that.

Well, I think I may be confused here with your Carver pre amp.
What audio processing can it do? Dolby digital? DTS? Dolby pro logic? That 4 station speaker switcher is what is confusing the issue for me, what it is doing. You may not really have a true 5.1 system even if you are still lacking a center speaker. I didn't see mention of what speakers you have now. If you have the room another one of the front speakers as center is ideal but many don't have this luxury. Then, a center from that company is the next choice.

All those amps are worthy, so don't get rid of any just yet, at least not until your system is properly configured. If you have the room and cost is not involved, free gear, keep them all. You can never have too much power, especially free power:D

Go get a Used CT-17 ( its 5.1 with SH , with that kind of good clean power , 5.1 will do just fine ) on Ebay or audiogon ( Sell your pre on Ebay , its only 2 channel , right ) And Keep both amps :) . That Luxman you got is a Gem . The adcom is good also .
