Acoustic Panels for Media Room

Hi Folks!

I wanted to know what kind of insulation would be ideal for my media room.

Specifics:
1. The media room is a dedicated, closed off space.
2. It is 9' high x 13.5' wide x 17.5' long
3. The screen and LCR are on the 9' high x 13.5' wide wall
4. There is a bit of an echo in the room
5. I've got a 7.2.4 setup (overkill, I know )

How many acoustic panels should I use? What shape, size, and material? Any recommendations on acoustic panel manufacturers?

Be careful not to overdo the treatments. Its a theater room, not a studio, I presume. You want it to have some life and natural acoustic action.

Are you talking about trying to sound proof? Is it already furnished?

Based on the description he gave I'm going to presume "finished and looking for room treatments."


@zandaman, have you taken any REW measurments or such to show what is going on in your room?
Is it carpeted?
Do you have it fully furnished?
Artwork or knick-knacks? Bookshelves? A lot can be done with just the standard household level of "make it comfy."

If you have too much mid-high energy at your LP, then sometimes, putting panels on the side wall at the first reflection points and maybe even behind the mains on the front wall can help. Diffraction on the back wall is a common tool, as that breaks up and spreads out the reflected energy hitting that wall without just absorbing all sound. If you have too much bass energy, you'll need a larger room just to fit the bass traps! (Effective bass traps take up a lot of space!)
If it is just about trying to tame some of the slap-echo in your room, you can be a lot more lax and creative about how you go about treating for that.

If its what Lovin' asked... and your gonna tear down the walls and redo everything...

In response to your questions:
- this is to deal with some echo
- it is carpeted
- not furnished yet
- no art or bookshelves

It will be furnished soon. We're trying to figure out the optimal furnishing for our media room dimensions (the projector screen is 120" on our 9'x13.5' wall).

Any recommendations for seating arrangement would be fantastic as well! We're debating:
- two rows of recliners (may be too stuffy to fit in our room)
- two single seaters and a two seat recliner
- a single V or U shaped recliner

Not a specialist in that.

I would recommend getting it furnished and see how much echo there is after.
It is EXCEEDINGLY common to over-treat rooms, kill all the sound, only to find out you went too far and spent a lot of money! Our ears don't like Anechoicly Dead rooms. They want/expect/need to hear some of that reflection. And going into this with little understanding of acoustics can actually create more problems than you endeavored to fix.
Again, not telling you NOT TO... rather, proceed cautiously and learn about what you actually need.
