Acer sound issues....

Hello. Ok here we go.

I have an Acer H243H monitor. It has an HDMI, DVI and VGA connection in the rear. It also has an audio in. It has built in speakers that suck!

I hooked up my direct tv wireless box to it and have it working in the kitchen for my wife. Now like I stated before the sound sucks....can barely hear it. I tried plugging in some desktop speakers, my wireless JBL speaker both via the audio in jack in the rear of the monitor. NOTHING! No sound.

the directv box has only an HDMI, USB, Digital Audio (orange one) and a/v out (svideo looking one).

Why? I read that the reason might be it only has an audio in and not an out. If so......how can I make it work? Any adapters? Something at radio shack? Thank You.

oh does it really matter if the rca coaxial I am using to plug into the digital audio on the box is a red one and not the orange one?

I just bought this a radio shack. I ran an rca from the digital audio on the back of the box into a audio adapter 1/4" stereo male to rca female then into a 3.5mm female and then into my jbl flip speaker......basically the rca from the box into the female part of the audio adapter then the male part of the audio adapter into the female part of the other adapter and then finally the male part (3.5mm) into the flip....no dice. NOthing. dam it. Now what?

I don't need power just enough to be able to hear it properly.

I got a headache trying to follow your last post.

Unless you can provide more of a description of what that "a/v out (svideo looking one)" does, you might be stuck with what sound that monitor can deliver. If we knew what it does, maybe we cound help more. If it is, in fact, just an S-video out then you're boned.

An audio in is just that, an input, not an output.

Now, you might get by using that orange digital out on the TV box if you're willing to spring for a relatively inexpensive external DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) to convert the digital audio into analog so you could drive those speakers. Naturally, you would have to control the volume with the speakers volume control.

If you're open to that last idea, chime in. Others will pick up this thread I'm sure. As to which one (there are several types), I'll leave that to the more technically inclined.

Seriously, I have no life.
Unfortunately your Acer monitor does not appear to have any type of audio out either analog or digital.

The only way to avoid using the TV speakers, is to purchase an AV receiver. Your direct TV unit has no analog out either. This all has to do with Draconian DRM

Your only option is to connect your Direct TV unit by HDMI to an AV receiver and then connect the receiver to speakers and via HDMI to your TV. Your other alternative, is to purchase another TV. No TVs have analog outs any more, but many have digital audio outs, usually optical. Some active sound bars can be fed from a TV optical out.

You do not have a cheap solution to this problem.

I suggest reading through this thread:
Speakers with Digital Input

There are powered speakers on the market that will accept a digi coax out from your STB. Basically, the DAC, Amp, and speakers are all in 1 units (or 2 units for 2 speakers).

I did not read that entire thread, and I cannot make a recommendation. However, if you do a little research, you will find that this is probably your best option, if you insist on going down the path that you have already set out on.

Here is an example

There are certainly better ways to accomplish your goals, but probably more costly.

PS: You probably know this now, but Acer is pretty much junk.
