I think I am going to pick up a refurb TX-SR805 for $499 from Onkyo unless somebody can give me a good reason not to. :D

My Yamaha HTR-5250 is getting pretty dated. I think it is finally time to step in to the 21st century.

Thoughts?

I think you'd be pleased. That's without knowing what you want or need from an AVR.

Looking for best bang for the buck. Like to keep it under or around $500. I want a receiver that has at least three HDMI inputs and does a good job at upconverting. I want something that supports the newest formats. The power output isn't a huge concern as long as it is good clean power.

I think the 805 will do you nicely. Just make sure you give it room for air circulation as these models do produce a decent amount of heat.

The stand it will be on is fairly open so heat shouldn't be a problem.

Sounds like it's just what you need. That's a good price too. The 705 is $480 new (in black).

Only 2 HDMI in.

I already ordered the 805 anyway. $489 shipped. I know there have been better eals on it, but I didn't want to wait too long and not be able to find one.
Gotcha!;) I had an Onkyo before my current Yamaha. I never had any issues.

$499??? The cheapest I have seen on the 805 was $599 at shoponkyo and Amazon

onkyo 805

I ordered the same receiver the other day from Club Onkyo because it was refurbed I bought the 2yr extended warranty. I've been researching receivers for quite some time. I just bought a new Panny 58PZ800U and wanted to wait for their receiver to hit the market. I was also looking at the Pioneer VSX-01TXH, Denon 1909 but got impatient and pulled the trigger on the 805. Hopefully I made the right decision.

Well it was a good run...

Watching a movie last night and the 805 decided to shut itself off and the red light next to the power button started flashing. I went over to it and pressed the power button. Snap crackle pop and then a big cloud of magic smoke came out of the receiver. I disconnected power and everything else from the receiver and let it sit overnight. I tried it again this morning and it powers on for a couple of seconds then shuts off and the red light starts flashing. I don't really think it is worth the time and effort to try and get it repaired so it's time to start shopping for a new receiver! If anyone wants the 805 shoot me a PM with an offer.

Im not a Onkyo fan to many problems with solder point for the HDMI board. But Check my thread on the Sony and the Yamaha VERY affordable NEW AVRs. They are The newest ones they make and pretty bullet proof

Onkyo has extended the warranty on that line of lemons.

I sent my 707 in last summer. It took 2 weeks from the time I filled out the form on the website til I got the repaired unit back.

I can't post links yet, so you'll have to Google. Or if somebody else knows it they can post it.

I'll look in to this. Thanks for the tip.

Edit: After some quick research it doesn't look like the 806 falls under the extended warranty.

I thought the 806 would be covered. If you want to be sure you can PM me your email and I'll send you the links. All you have to do is type in your Serial # on the website.

I found the page on the Onkyo site. When I put my info in I get:

This Serial/Unit does not need update - Please recheck your Serial (and Model if applicable.)

Oh well. I guess I'll throw it on ebay to see if I can at least get a few bucks for it.

I decided to go with the Denon AVR-S900W. It's sitting on my doorstep waiting for me to get home!

2008 til early 2015 - Not too shabby for a refub. I got my 805 new in Dec 2007 for $700. Still going strong and no plans to replace it, unless it would crap inevitably crap-out.
Only then I expect to replace it with nice Mid-range denon
Unfortunately while back in 05 series Onkyo was the underdog - pulling all stops trying to get top end features for reasonable dollar. Sadly not anymore. I look at their product line and it looks like they have given up. I hope some at Onkyo will read these lines. I'd love to replace my 805 with new Onkyo, but sadly Denon beats then hands down in every single category
