Is it worth going from 5.1 -7.1? I have a great set up now but was thinkn of going to 7.1 but wasnt sure if it was worth it. What do you think?

Need some ideas on what speakes to get if I was to get some. I have all DefTech gear front, BP7002, center c/l/r 2002, rear BPX. I was thinkn about going with the StudioMonitor 350 to have my 7.1.

Thanks in advance.

It all comes down to a matter of preference - there is not that much
information going to the surrounds. My preference for 7.1 would be, to
have the studio 350 set up to the sides and rear - for a more seamless
and blended surround effect. Other members may feel different.

Yeah that was my thoughts as of now too was there wasnt that much movies out there that utilized 7.1 thats why I havent pulled the trigger yet and go for 7.1. My set up now is the BPX are on the back wall behind my head. I was thinking bout putting the 350's next to each other directly behind my head, but once again wasnt sure if that was even needed for such small room tho.

Have you seen this - do you enjoy the speakers in the back?

With the current formats there is actually quite a bit of sound coming from the rears. Having said that, I went back to 5.1 from 6.1 and I don't miss it at all.

Yes thank you but Ive seen all of them thats why I bought the BPX to start off with and then potentially move to 7.1 if the value was there for haveing a 7.1 system. Those links are very helpfull tho.

The only difference is my back triangle speakers are on the back wall vs the side walls other than that its pretty much the same set up.

The real question is is it worth spending another $500+ for 2 more speakers if im not going to really gain any better surround sound quality? Thats the really question that Im having and if it is worth it would the StudioMonitor 350 be enough or do I need another pair of BP7002's.

Im just really dumb founded by the whole 7.1 idea if there isnt much available content out there for 7.1.

If Im wrong please correct me so that I can understand better.

It is up to you - a matter of preference and space. I would not spend
$500 more for a 7.1, and if I played music with 7.1 - I would want the
bookshelf (monopole) speakers for surround and rears - to give a more
seamless surround sound. A lot of people are happy with a 5.1 system.

You may want to give it more time - before you make a decision. Do
you not enjoy what you have now?

No I love what I have now and am very excited about the purchace that I made with the DefTech gear. I was just looking into maybe going to 7.1 for the heck of it cause I got my Xmas bonus and had around 1.5k to drop so I thought I would look into it and see if it was worth my while.

I primarly watch movies and games dont really listen to music very much tho.

If your side surrounds are already on the rear walls, then I'm pretty sure 7.1 is not for you. By going with 7.1, assuming you have the proper and significant space behind you as a listener, you are then more free to put the side surrounds at 90 degrees, because they no longer have to try to straddle for the side and rear areas.

IMO, 7.1 is worth it, if you have the space. My rear speakers were only like $200, maybe less. There are currently 193 bluray titles that are recorded in 7.1, and the last 7.1 movie I remember seeing, Toy Story 3, had some of the best audio on a movie I've heard to date.

If you have tall ceilings with money to burn, you can try height speakers for a taller soundstage. If you have plenty of width (and you don't mind the actual speaker placements), you can try Audyssey DSX widths too. There are extremely few processors that can do the simultaneous 11.1, many more at 9.1, and of course just about all of them can do 7.1.

I got BPX's for rears knowing that they are great speakers and that if and when I decide to go to 7.1 the BPX will provide for great side speakers. I dont have a ton of room for rears but prob could manage to put some back there the only prob that I have is my sides would have little room to have them directly in the middle of the listing area. The sides would be closer to the rears vs being in the middle of the room. I didnt realize that there were so many 7.1 blu-rays out there.

Next question I have is if I were to go with 7.1 does it matter what if my rears match my front sound stage or can I go bigger/smaller speakers?

Thanks for all the info and help.

Not as critical as the front stage - Using Def Tech all the way will
blend better. I would not use one brand for the side and then use
another one for the rear. They do not need to be as big as the
front speakers. For the most part - the side and rears are on the
wall or stands.

Thanks that is what I was thinkn was to keep same brand. I will also prob keep same size as well to that why I was thinkn on going with the StudioMoniter 350 because they match every speaker that I have right now in my system.
