Harman Kardon in my opinion but you will get a lot of those. I have an AVR235 and love it.

Right now in the $300-400 range the Pioneer vsx-1014 is an unbelievable bargain. They are being cleared out for the 1015. Do some research on this receiver.

i have an hk avr 335, and its pretty nice, only 55-65 watts per channel, but its the best i found for 500 bucks. 500 after shipping.

the 2805 i think would be the next choice by denon but its 600-700 bucks. 100 watts a channel.

both good receivers, and both new so they have all the cool stuff, 7.1 and auto speaker setting with a mic.

No, Marantz SR8400

Can't touch that deal. That will go for around $500. Next would be either the Pioneer mentioned above, or the HK units. The Yamaha 2500 should be coming down to the $600 range as soon as they release the new models. It's equivalent to the Marantz.

What about the Yamaha 5860. It is on sale at electronics expo.com for $327. How is the sound quality on this receiver?

It's not HK quality - and all the HK's are quality sounding receivers, or nowhere near the receiver the Marantz SR8400 is.

I know budgets are an issue, but you really don't see the quality in the Yamaha lines until you step up to the 1500 or 2500. Similarly, the same goes with Denon's 2805 and 3805. A budget surround receiver will sound like a budget surround receiver. Less expensive components yield a lesser quality sound. Pioneer has one - the 1014 and 1015, that is priced under $500 that I'll consider higher quality.
