A/V Receiver power handling

Hello everyone. i used to be a DJ and rigged up all kinds of random hookups and they all worked for the most part. Some things didn't or sounded bad. I joined Auidoholics to gain professional knowledge and advice. I never worked with AV receivers and have some questions about them, especially since I wanna build a good system for my own home use. I can also offer some advice on DJ'ing for the very fresh novices. Let me ask my first questions.

1. If I have a surround speaker hook up, can I just isolate the main left and right while spinning records?

3. If a receiver is rated at say 100w per channel X 7 =700w total,is there a way you can change the power assignment, or rather can you choose to use only 2 channels at 350w each. What kind of product can do that?

Thanks guys.
I look forward to participating in the forums.

Question #1 the answer is yes,you can play your receiver in 2 channel stereo mode where only the left & right front produce sound,if the receiver is rated at 100x7 you will still only have 100 watts going to the front 2 speakers.

Question #2 the answer is no,if your receivers amp is rated at 100x7 there will never be 700 watts total, that rating is a sales gimmick & not a truthfull rating.

Part two to question # 2, the internal amp inside a reciever is basically a multi channel amp,in order to gain power from unused channels you would have to bridge 2 of the channels into one channel, alot of multi channel amps are capable of being bridged but i know of no receiver where its capable.

Read this article for a good description of what 100x7 really means & to get an idea of what you can do with it.
