I have a small budget and want to upgrade incrementally. Is it a wise idea to buy an inexpensive receiver with pre-outs and a good multi-channel amplifier? Will this give me combination give me good sound with future upgradeability without having to spend $3000+ on a top of the line receiver?

This will depend heavily on your overall long-term budget... You just went from "small budget" to "$3000" receiver in two sentences...

What are your long and short term goals, how much money do you want to spend now and what will you be doing with your system?

Hello. I am about to do the same thing. I currently have a Yamaha RX-V1300 A/V receiver which I purchased about a month ago. Sound is fantastic from this receiver. I have used Harmon Kardon, Onkyo, and Integra products in the past and found the Yamaha to be the best sound for me.

I also purchased some used Paradigm Reference Studio 40 v2 speakers about two weeks ago. I bi-wired them to get better sound. It opened up the soundstage a bit.

I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my NAD C270 power amp that I ordered. I will use the NAD to drive my bi-wired Paradigms for two channel stereo using the pre-outs on my Yamaha receiver. I hope this combination will give me the best two channel stereo sound and also allow me to have a Home theater setup which is outstanding also. Further down the road I may try to bi-amp the Paradigms using the receiver amp for the Paradigm lows and the NAD for the highs. This would be a little aggresive though (I just hate the thought of not using the amps on the receiver for the mains at all).

The NAD C270 has a variable input gain so I am hoping I can match the sound from this amp with the Yammie's for Home theater use.

I'll keep you posted on how it sounds.

If you can, try and audition the Yamaha MX 1 power amp and the Carver and ADCOM GFA amps. Will open up a new world for you. The Yamaha MX 1 is awesome but hard to get as Yamaha makes it in limited numbers.

We all must be on the same page! I forgot about this post and after much thought I decided to pull the trigger (sts). I got a good deal on a Sony TA-N900ES amplifier and also bought the Yamaha RX-V1300. I am going to run the amp in BTL to run the front speakers and the center channel. The receiver will run all of the other channels. I DID NOT read this post before I made my decision. Thanks for the verification that I am on the right track.
