i would think this might merit a review in audioholics as it is completely unbelievable if true. i just recently came across this in a thread on AVS on rythmik subs:

"I found this at the "Audyssey" official thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...96#post9792196

Audyssey does not only substantially cut through subsonic content (ie, below 20hz), but will dramatically impact 20-30hz as well. You can read this thread for more information:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...highlight=3806

Trimming the subwoofer does NOT solve this issue. Audyssey MultiEQ was designed for the average consumer, which generally speaking, will not have subwoofers capable of reference output below 25hz. They have addressed this issue with the PRO version of Audyssey, and they have also paired with subwoofer companies such as SVS to address and provide the benefits of Audyssey down into the low extension realms:

http://www.svsound.com/CES2007/SVS_AudyessyRelease.pdf "

so this is basically saying that all of us that go out and buy our big bux subs and play them on 95% of all AVR's on the planet (audyssey) are no better off than if we had just gone out and bought some wimpy 10" sub?

someone later on in the thread (this is from a thread on rythmik subs) pointed out that the above referenced audyssey post is a couple of years old. have they changed this? is audyssey really crippling our subs below 30hz? in response, many posters said some variation of "just check it with a RS meter and you will see it's not true". which would be fine if you could find a non-pro sound meter that could read down below 20hz accurately. what is audioholics take on all this?

Read the various articles I've written about Audyssey and how to calibrate subwoofers. I measure bass with and without Audyssey engaged. If Audyssey is setup wrong then it can limit bass output but if its setup correctly you shouldn't lose any extension at all.

See: http://www.audioholics.com/tweaks/get-good-bass/multiple-subwoofer-setup-calibration-1

Don't believe everything you read on AVS or any audio forum.
oh believe me, i don't. except this is the thread that audyssey themselves answers the questions to. but if you say we won't lose any extension than that answers that as you guys are one of the only sources in this industry that i believe. thanx for the response.

before getting my subwoofer EQ1, i didn't use the built in receiver audyssey because i did feel that my bass was neutered when it was on. subjective impression of course.

I forgot to qualify that I use Audyssey MultEQ Pro in my setup. Mark Sanfilipo did test a Denon receiver with standard Audyssey but I don't see any rolloff caused by it. I suppose anything is possible. Next time I test a receiver with Audyssey I will test for this issue that you/others are complaining about.

PS. When the Denon AVR-5805 first came out, I did find an Audyssey bug dealing with the subwoofer channel which was reported in my review. I believe they have since then resolved it on all future iterations but its possible there is some bad code lingering on some models.

I experienced this in the past when I tried to run each sub independent in my system as opposed to running a single correction curve for all subs. It's in my article that I referenced in a prior post in this thread.

sounds like hogwash. In fact I think it's the opposite in that it will often correct below tuning frequencies.

i tend to agree. i stated in the other thread that it seems to me we would be hearing a LOT of flack by now by reviewers, subwoofer manufacturers and sub fanboys if audyssey was chopping off frequencies below 30hz. imagine what that would do to the FR graphs alone.

max reference output below 25hz (115db)... now that sounds like it'd rupture some gyprock...
