A Receiver For My Buddy

I want to buy a "best man" gift for a friend of 30 years whose receiver is fried. I would like to spend $500.00 to $600.00. If I could buy him a top-of-the-line receiver, I would know what to buy, but I don't know what to buy in that price range. I know he favors Yamaha, because he admires their engines, as I do (he had a Ford Taurus SHO at one time). I saw a Sony STRDA-1000, $600.00, in Tweeter that was very impressive looking, and it was heavy, but I don't know what it sounds like. So, what's the best deal for the dough, guys?

I personally think Yamaha and Denon are hard to beat in that range. If you look, you might be able to get the Yamaha RX-V1400 for about $600. The RX-V750 would also be a nice option. In Denon, you might be able to find a closeout 2803 around for within your range. H/K, Marantz and Onkyo also make very nice receivers in this range. I don't really think you can go wrong with any of the brands I listed and your friend should be very happy. As far as the Sony goes? I would stick with the brands mentioned above or even Pioneer Elite models. Sony has really lost it the last several years in terms of buidl quality, sound and realiability.
