A number of screen questions and misc

Hi all. January 15th is the day I get my 8700 UB. I am stuck on what size of screen to get as I originally built my cave for a large plasma, LCD, or anything other than projection. In doing this I have placed no power source and no source feeds in the ceiling. Needless to say I will need to run some black conduit. My room is 14 wide by 26 long with 7 1/2 foot ceilings. 100% light controlled both with dimmers, flat black ceilings, dark red walls, charcoal/granite carpet. The wall I would like to project on is 133" wide 86" tall with a 10" stage built in front that extends out roughly 2 feet. The couches are set back so the viewer is at 15 ft. There is a love seat and large chair on either side of the couch which form a "U". Here is my dilemma. Based on what is considered standard mounting height I need at least 1 foot from the ceiling and 3 feet from the floor to get the best viewing experience. Does this include the stage? If so this limits my screen size to around 90 inches. I was looking for something in the 118" diagonal range. My choice of screen is Carada. the 118 " 16:9 has a viewing surface that measures 102.9 x 57.9. Do I measure from the ceiling to the viewing area or the outside frame which is even wider....thus further reducing my screen size. If I base the measurement from the floor to the viewing area I would have a 118" 16:9 carada that is 1 foot from the ceiling, 16" from the floor, and 6" above the stage. Would this be ok? If not should I consider the 2.35:1 wide screen format (using the same measurements it would be 27" off the floor and 17 off the stage) WOuld the 2.35:1 look cramped viewing normal 16:9 formats? Does this limit my viewing experiences? The 120 2.35 and the 118 16:9 are within a couple of hundred dollars. Too me it makes no difference on the price. What does matter is I want the largest viewing area possible within the parameters I set forward. I see no point in reconfiguring my HT if all I am going to get is a 90" screen. Originally I had my equipment up front. With the projector going in I will have to relocate my amp, receiver, and sources to the side of the room to allow for the full visibilty of my screen. No biggie on that.

As always I appreciate your feedback and guidance. I have yet to be steered wrong. FYI - current setup is Paradigm 60's v5, EMO XPA3, MArantz SR6003. After the TV situation is figured out I will add a CC690, 4 surrounds, and either an SVS or Epik sub. I have to build in increments as my wife would S^^^ if she saw what I am spending. So I remodel rooms before I make large purchases. After this I promised the kitchen would be done. Theres my barginning chip to finish the HT out.

Thanks

Thanks

[Rant On] Personally, I think you screwed yourself a little by putting in that 10” high stage. In most instances they’re purely decorative and serve no real purpose. I wouldn’t put a stage in any room with 8’ ceilings or less unless the center channel was positioned behind the screen. [Rant Off]

With a room that size, I’d been inclined to do a false screen wall.

If I’m understanding correctly, you only have 76” vertically for the screen? Where were you planning on locating the CC-690, hopefully in front of the stage, because that will help the situation? But not much, since you don’t want it too close to the floor and the 690 is not exactly small.

Personally, I’d compromise a little and move the top of the screen to 6” below the ceiling.
86 - 6 – 58 = 22”

Otherwise, 110” dia. is the smallest I’d go.

IMO, forget 2.35 for now. 1.78 on a 2.35 screen is a very reduced pic. Good glass is incredibly expensive. If using the zoom method that is also another can of worms, whether light control, lack of lumens, and the issue of which AR to even calibrate for.

If you sit double digit feet away from screen (from its final position) you may consider AT screens. The Seymour DIY is super affordable for instance.

If need be, I would also consider getting screen closer to ceiling, however, if you can use something like a flat black paint. You can search my posts in this subforum for paint recs.

For the future, please organize your post so that it takes us much less effort to read. Attached pics or diagrams can make this easier for us too. It takes a lot of effort to try to wade through your post, and by the time I'm done, I've used half my energy which instead could have been towards explaining more things on your behalf. Morale of the story: help us help you, thanks for considering.
