Hey Guys, I stumbled today on this great article, and while it doesn't directly talk about anything audio related, we can find plenty of examples in the audio world if we try a bit (no need to go far)
The Article is named "Anchoring Effect" and while it come as obvious to some, it's still a good reminder to us all, how placebo effect can and do affect our daily life, while we not even noticing how we get tricked and cheat by "the man"

It is a shame that the average person is dumb enough to be suckered by such tactics. So many people place too much emphasis on their social standing and appearance of wealth. Running up 10's of thousands of dollars in debt, just to keep up with the latest fashions and trends.
I also find it funny that in the article, they talk about how people wouldn't accept lower pay to work because it would be degrading. And I think that it has some relevance to the employment crisis going on now. There are many jobs out there, but people just don't want to lower their standards and take a lower paying job.
An interesting article, thank you very much.

I think you are missing the point of the article, and I wont call MIT students "average people" nor "dumb". I can bet, you'd be caught pants down if were to guess certain number, while didn't have "an anchor"

Seems like something that probably works on people with way too much money on their hands. Personally, there is not a leather jacket in the world worth $400.

But of course I have never paid more than $1200 for a car in my life and I am in my mid 40's.

This seems more like a exercise in consumerism than anything else....

I don't think it's just limited to consumerism.
It's more an exercise in human nature.
These techniques have been used to steer societies for hundreds of years. Politicians have always used the methods, so does religion, the NRA, PETA, etc.

That's excellent, thanks very much for the link. I think we're all guilty, at least some of the time, of blindly purchasing products without any reference other than the listed price. I try not to make spur-of-the-moment purchases in order to avoid such situations, but I know I'm being ripped some of the time.
