a few plasma tv questions

I realize these beat around the edge of some very common questions.. I've read several faq type sites on the internet trying to get answers to my specific questions, but haven't found what I'm looking for.

1 - Watching a movie with black bars on the sides/top & bottom - Does doing this, say, twice a week, have any long term effect on quality plasmas? I don't like the grey bars displayed that some tv's project.. it just looks funny.

2 - Displaying a gray screen to "wash" out any burn in.. Does this have the same effect of white washing the display? I've heard that doing this, white washing, will get rid of most pixels that have been effected by burn in, but significantly lowers the life of the display.

I was talking to a seemingly knowledgable rep at best buy recently. I asked about burn in and if it was really a factor with the latest displays. He said "let me show you what has happened to our floor models." (the store had just opened 3 weeks prior to this) He went up to a panasonic or samsung display and changed it to a white screen. You could clearly see a vertical line separating each half of the screen (you know what you typically see displaying the "normal resolution" on one side and HD on the other) Granted, these tv's were set to display ONE thing, and had been doing so for several weeks... but if I were to watch movies a few times a week for a year or two, would the screen suffer from burn in?

Thanks for the help -

You should have no problem with burn in if you:

a) buy a good display

b) watch something other than movies, ESPN and news channels that have the streamers

c) After you watch a movie with the bars, watch some regular tv before you turn it off.

d) Turn down the settings from the typical "torch" mode the factories set them at as default.

e) Basically avoid displaying static images for hour upon hours.

As for your second question, I cannot answer it as I have no experience with it. IMO the bottom line is use some caution/common sense and enjoy your tv.:)
