A couple of questions

Heya everyone, I have a couple of questions for you all if you don't mind. First, I would be sitting approximately 10 to 12 feet from my display. Would a 56" display be too big, or should I go bigger? Second, I have an older (12-13yrs) reciever but it does have surround, and a few other things on it. Would it be good enough or should I buy something newer? The room is basically 22' x 13' but the back half is used as a dining area. I could salvage a few more feet but not much.


Edit: I am looking very hard at this: JVC HD56FH96 as a display. I can get it for approximately $3500 or so. Any other suggestions?

That TV will be fine but at that distance a larger one would work too.

While that older receiver may work, you will enjoy a true 5.1 or 6.1 receiver with all the appropriate speakers better. Maybe you can use its amps with a newer receiver?

I am just getting started with setting one up and am looking at somewhere around $5000 to spend. I know between the speakers I want and the TV that I will be close already and was kind of hoping my older A/V reciever would work for a while. I'll probably be buying some Axioms.

Yes, the older one will work for a while, until it dies permanently
You will get dolby pro logic in the meantime. It will give you incentives to save for the next one.

You have a nice sized room. Many hear would be jealous.

Have you considered front projection?

It is by far the least expensive per diagonal inch.

I get a 100" HD picture for US$1800.

Heya westcott, I am really impressed. I have been thinking very hard on a projector set up. I don't know if I'm ready to start running all of the wiring to set one up properly. What I want to do is have it set up in the ceiling on a "motorized" shelf operated by remote. I only have 8' ceilings and where it would be is easily accessed. I just don't know if I will have the time (I work a lot) to get it "just right". I have been toying with the idea of a Mitsubishi DLP projector (can't remember the model #) but it sells for around $3000.

Whichever way you go, DLP or LCD. or LCOS or DILA, make sure you spend some time at your local dealer watching a DLP system (half hour min.).

My wife and I see the rainbow artifacts, get headaches, and even motion sickness.

I liked what DLP had to offer but LCD turned out not to be such a bad compromise.

I think you will find doing it yourself will be very rewarding and may be the only way it will get done right, without spending a fortune. You can also do it stages. Those motorized shelves are pricey but sure do make things look clean!!!

Take your time and I am sure you will find a solution that works best for you at a reasonable price.
