I ran wire during construction, mounted and hooked up two outdoor speakers with sonance V-control next to covered porch door.

Everyone I talked to (salesman) said that I'd be able to send sound to outside speakers with this unit WHILE playing other speakers inside.

Example: Football over fronts inside, i-pod through speakers outside.

Best I can tell, is NO you can not.

After reading over and over the manual, it looks like I can activate Zone 2 with an infrared port, but then it silences or "mutes the main room" (as the manual states, the main system.

All I can get it to do is play on the porch what the main system is playing.

I read somewhere about setting the max volume to the 2ndary set of speakers, so ther must be some independece between the two, but it doesn't look like it's going to do what I wanted.... at least not out of the box.

hmmmm?

I don't know what you mean by activating an infrared port but a 7.1 receiver that offers Zone 2 support can play 5.1 in the main room and stereo in zone 2 at the same time and with different sources to each. The Yamaha 663 I believe is a relatively new receiver and should be able to do it just fine.

Sounds like you are confusing zone b and zone 2. Make sure the extra speakers are set to zone 2. The mains will be muted if you are using zone b. Also check pg 99 - the zone 2 stuff won't show up if you aren't set correctly.
