jamoman : I have a Yamaha RX-Z1 receiver and a Yamaha MX-1 amp to drive my main speakers that are rated at 4 ohms. Should I set the impedance selector to 4 or 8 ohms? My speakers are Jamo D870 main, D8 center, and D8 surrounds. I currently have the switch set at 8 ohms will this damage my receiver or my speakers?

Keep the settings to 8 ohms for your RX-Z1 and as far as the MX-1 amp goes it has no impedance selector switch and can drive speakers all the way down to 1 ohms. I am using almost the same setup as yours except that I have the DSP-AZ1 and MX-1 as main with Yamaha speakers for front and rear which are rated at 6 ohms nominal.
The impedance selector is for UL certification purposes as traditionaly Yamaha recievers and DSP amps have had the capability to drive all the way down to 2 ohms. This is also explained quite clearly in the Audioholics site with technical description.
Btw: Where did you buy the MX-1? It has been discontinued by Yamaha since last year.
