8 ohm 1 watt speakers for tv

Does anyone have any suggestions to help with a hook up of 8 ohm 1 watt speakers to a tv? The only audio output is a digital audio coax plug in which the manual says is 8 ohm 1 watt. I've tried a couple of speakers suggested by Radio Shack and a speaker I had here, but cannot get any sound. The sound quality on the tv is tinny and I was hoping to improve that quality. What is the difference between an RCA jack and a digital audio coaxial jack? Do you have any comments? suggestions?

That digital audio coax has to be plugged into a receiver which will amplify the signal. Then speaker wires are used to connect the speakers. Please post the model of your TV and speakers if you plan to go this route.

Physically, there is none. the difference is in the signal it passes.

RCA plugs and jacks are used for a myriad of different things in the real world.

Sometimes it's color is a clue.

Yellow generally means composite video.

Red, blue and green are RGB component video signals.

Orange is digital audio.

Red and white are line level audio signals.

...and the list goes on and on. YMMV

Something is wrong with your manual. A digital output coax is 75 ohm termination, and the signal requires a digital to audio converter, which receivers have. Then the signal needs to go to a power amp to power a speaker. Digital signals are burst of one and zeros and are actually computer signals type signals, and can't not be heard without processing.

So unless your TV has an output from the power amp, and very few do anymore, what you want is not possible without going to significant expense.
