Hello
Having calibrated both sets recently The Hitachi VS810 is a substantial upgrade from the Sony. The proprietary Dual focus light engine that Hitachi uses is very good,
Build quality and looks are also a step up from the Sony.

Another thing to consider with these very large LCD’s Is customer service from the manufacture No other way to say this but Sony has absolutely terrible CSR’s Hitachi is not the best in the industry but better than average with their 1 year in home customer care warranty
Hope this helps

Need to check those inputs... the early Sony models didn't have DVI or HDMI. Since you didn't give a model number, I can only recommend you check. It would be a waste to have that much TV and not have the latest inputs. :(

Thanks for the input!

the model numbers are:
Sony: KDF-70XBR950
Hitachi: 70VX915

Style points are high for me as is picture quality.
Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Just curious as to your room size...

What size room are you planning to put that behemoth in?

I have a Sony 60" and my room is 13' 6" wide by 30' long. The TV just fits as far as proportions go and I could probably have had a better fit with the 55" but my wife lost that "disagreement".... ;)

the KDF-70XB950 has a single DVI input only, no HDMI or cable-card connections. can you tell us what model you worked with, Ray ? most retailers are only showing the older model I listed and trying to get any real information out of the Sony website is like trying to sell DTS stock to George Lucas... two high end inputs and a cable card would make for a much more worthy tv. :)

So I get the sense that the Hitachi is a better TV and also a bit cheaper.

My Family room is 15' Long and 25' wide....but this rooms also opens up to the kitchen wich adds another 15-20' Long.

I am debating whether it is worth to spend the extra $1500-$2000 for the 70" over the 60", but it just seems that the 70" would be the icing on the cake!

But again.....am I right that either way you all prefer the new hitachi (70vs810 or the 60vs810) over the XBR and Grand Wega Sony's??????

Thanks!!!

I ended up with a Sony ( KDF-60XS955 ) after doing lots of comparison shopping. Some, but not all stores, let me tinker with the picture settings on the various sets and overall I found the Sony model I picked to have the best options and picture. There is some "screen door" that can be seen up close but if you are more that 6 feet away it disappears and my seating is 10 - 12 feet away so it's not an issue.

The ultimate choice is up to the individual, let your eyes & ears decide what's best for you. Whatever you decide on, you'll get loads of enjoyment out of. :D

I think this is dead-on. If you're willing to go with a 60 inch model, the XS or WF Sony models are better choices than the XB's. :) The XS and WF just don't come in 70 inch. :(

So what do you think? Give me your thoughts on the 60" and on the 70"....Sony or Hitachi? If you go with sony on 60", then to go XBR with the W or S?

I don't know about the Hitachi but with the sony when you change channels from digital to analog you have to switch inputs on your receiver, or use analog only and have no 5.1

Ray,

The discussion in this thread has centred around 60" and 70".

What about the 50VS810 ? With threads on other forums about green bleed etc I'm feeling a little gunshy.

I also was looking at the 60" Sony & Hitachi. I would have been happy with either one, but I chose the Hitachi because I got a much better deal.
Also, for anyone who has calibrated the Hitachi 60VS810, what settings should I be using.
