7.1 to 6.1 analog via Y connector?

I have a 6.1 speaker system that I can't upgrade. I want to purchase blu-ray that only spits out 7.1 and 5.1 native analog. Is it a bad idea to combine the two rear channels of a 7.1 signal using a y connector into one to support my 6.1 single rear channel? I need analog because my receiver cant decode HD audio signals that my soon to be panasonic blu-ray player can.

Thank you!

Not advisable. You might possibly damage the amps. Learn to love 5.1 until you get a new receiver and speakers. It doesn't suck.

I know that some 7.1 receivers can be used in a 6.1 mode, so there is a possibility that you could check to see if any of the players can be configured this way also. I presume you are talking about feeding the 7.1 analog signal to your receiver? I agree with Mark that it would not be a good idea to use a Y to feed the signal to a single rear channel input.
