7.1 system playing a 5.1 track

Which set of surrounds plays when I play a DVD with a 5.1 soundtrack? I have a Mirantz SR8400 thats not hooked up yet. If the side surrounds are used in 5.1 HT playback, would the rear surrounds be used for music or DVD or DVDA/SACD playback? Can the receiver be set to do this?

The side surrounds are used in 5.1 (the used to just be called 'surrounds'). The rear surrounds are for the 6th and 7th channels.

You can use a 7.1 capable matrix decoder, like PLIIx, to play any analog or digital format over 7.1 speakers. Likewise, all channel stereo mode will use all 7 speakers.

You can use DSPs to turn most anything into 7.1 for everything but SACD and DVD-A with this particular receiver.
