I am curious about dipole vs. direct in a 7.1 system. My current system is running at 6.1 with directs on the side and a dipole for the back center.

What I am wondering is if I go up to a 7.1 (in anticipation of 7.1 audio tracks in the future) is there an advantage to having all (or some) dipoles, or would that in fact be a disadvantage?

If you are curious, I am using Athena B2.2's and a R1.2.

Thanks in advance.

Matthew

Your di-poles should be at the sides of your listening position, the direct speakers at the rear.

yep. but he implies that he has only 1 dipole.

as far as what is best, that depends. personal taste, and the room, not to mension "setup" , make a difference.

i have direct rears, and bi/di poles on the sides. sounds darned good.

Did you in fact buy the di-pole as a pair? If so, the suggested setup is as in my prior post.

I currently have only one dipole and use a 6.1 setup, but I am wanting to go up to a 7.1 soon.

So dipoles on the sides and directs in the back. That would work perfect for me, now I just need to get another Athena AS-R1.2 to match mine (ebay here I come. . .)

Thanks much.

I was mainly just worried that the sound fields would interact incorrectly if I had only 2, or all 4 dipoles in back.

from what i have found. using bi/dipoles, depending on the room. you may not even need/want rears, lots of guys don't. i know i could live without them, with the RVSS sides i have.
i have rears because : i already had the rear speakers. the receiver is 7.1. and i like having speakers all over the place :)

oh. take your 1 dipole, and swap it with one of your directs. put a movie on and see if you can tell a difference, and wether or not you like it.
