7.1 speaker location adjustment help

Hi there,

I'm in the process of putting together a home audio system with amp - pioneer sc-05, system 7.1 with polk audio vm 30/20/10 and sub.

My main living area is essentially a 30 X 15 open area my system being setup in a 12 X 15 cm area one one end of the room.

My plan was to have the center/sides just to the sides of my plasma (which is on one end of the 15 ft wall) and to ceiling mount the 4 surrounding speakers. My problem however is that my viewing/listening couch is against the opposite wall of my plasma (approx 12 ft bt plasma and viewing couch).

Given my room setup I cannot realistically move the listening couch forward much (if at all) so I was trying to get advice on how I should arrange my 4 surround speakers. From what I've read on here and the dolby dig sites, it would seem that ideally my 2 side speakers would be adjacent (but slightly behind and pointing toward) the couch I was listening from with the two rear speakers more directly behind the couch but to left and ride of listening position.

If I were to have this setup, my 4 surround spkears would all be rather close to one another. My question was, should I just continue with this setup or is there any benefit of making my two side speakers further away from my back speakers (say, even equal distance between my front and back speakers).

thanks for the help..

The two rear speakers in a 7.1 system should be a few feet behind and above the user.

Unless you can satisfy that requirement, you might want to content yourself with a 5.1 system.

Many that have the capability for 7.1 find it's better to have a properly set up 5.1 system than a kludged 7.1 system.
