7.1 Multi Channel Analog

Could someone please take a few minutes and explain this to me or point me to a good link/thread. What does this buy me in terms of fidelity? Is this for DVD (movie) play back or strictly for audio sources? If so what kind?

Many thanks to all...this is now my favorite forum since I have switched my OCD to upgrading my Home Theater!

The multi-channel analog inputs can be used for DVD playback if the receiver doesn't have any digital inputs (older receivers) or if you just want to let the player do the decoding of DD/DTS and have the receiver do nothing but amplify it.

They are also used for DVD-A and SACD discs where the multi-channel audio cannot be sent over s/pdif connections (coax or optical).

The Analog 7.1/5.1 refers to the SOUND only (music or movie sound). Not Video at all.

Yeah, basically you don't need 7.1 Analog if you have a HDMI receiver. HDMI does both VIDEO & SOUND.

Folks who don't have HDMI receivers or those who don't even have a receiver or a processor will appreciate 7.1/5.1 Analog.

For example, if you own a fantastic Denon AVR-5308 receiver, which is an awesome amp/preamp without HDMI, you will appreciate 7.1/5.1 Analog.

If you own integrated amps and refuse to buy receivers or pre-pros, you will appreciate 5.1 Analog.:D
