If you're talking about the new lossless HD-sound........

As far as I know......

Those receivers dont exist yet.

I have no clue either

I hope the multi-channel in supports DTS-HD later this year, if not we'll be forced to buy new receivers.

In any case its probably best to wait late next year or so when the formats stabilize(compatibility issues) and players go done in price.

If a DENON dvd-3910 costs $1,000 imagine what a high quality blu-ray player would cost, $5,000?

It's best to enjoy what you have in the meantime without spending to much and they upgrading later(you'll be able to save if you don't spend too much nowadays)

The 1600 will accept any format, even 7.1, through its multi channel inputs. Provided the player is doing the decoding.
I don't believe at this point the new players provide a 7.1 analog output. Only 5.1. So far.

I agree. Hold out for a while on buying a HD player.

No it doesnt, however as said above if it has 7.1 and the source is decoding the signal then it just simply amplifies the signal. The receiver cant decode it. Im not to sure wether or not im over enthused on the HDDVD etc scene yet.

I have heard that not a lot of dvd's are in 7.1, most are in 5.1. If this is true, what is the point in 7.1 vs 5.1? sorry i'm a newb

The surround processors in the 7.1 receivers will take the 5.1 source and matrix it into a 7.1 surround format. Many receivers do an excellent job at it too. You're missing out if you have yet to experience a properly calibrated 7.1 setup.
