Hello I am currently shopping for a ssubwoofer to go with my Pioneer1121K reciever. The problem is MCACC at this model does not EQ the sub. I was planning to get the Hsu VTF3.4 but after reading many posts, it seems like I should maybe get a Velydone that comes with EQ'er of the sub. I am currently in a 13 x 13 x 9 room.

This is my question,

Should I just get a VTF3.4 and just go with the Qcontrol without actual EQ of the sub or go with other subwoofer that may be smaller or not hit as low but WITH a EQ built in like Velodyne EQ 10 incher? (Are there any other subwoofers that come with a built in EQ'er like the Velodyne?)


At this point, I am regretting that I didnt just go with a Audessy XT32 reciever..

Do you have different places where you can put the sub? That will make a big difference in the frequency response. If you can place the sub very close to the listening position, like an endtable or right behind the seat, that can help with the frequency response as well. I would skip the Velodyne's max-EQ thing, it doesn't look like it has that much resolution. The VTF3 would be far more powerful than any equivalently priced Velodyne subs anyway.

Thank you shadyJ. Yes I do have the option to put the VTF 3.4 behind my listening seat. Also, I have been reading some more articles on this forum and the SVS PB12-NSD got a really good review. Like I have mentioned, my receiver is not capable of EQ'ing the sub so I am somewhat leaning toward the SVS since it seems like it has the best linear frequency response. If the VTF-3.4 can be as accurate as the SVS, I'd like to go with the VTF-3.4 since it has QControl (I can play with it) but from what I have been reading, it just seems like the SVS is more detailed and is flatter across frequencies.

Is this true?

I am looking at 70% HT/30% Music. Which is a better sub for my situation between the VTF 3.4 and the SVS PB12-NSD for a 13 x 13 x 9 room?

SVS subs do give up a little bit of output in order to stay linear, but that won't solve your problem as the room will mess up this ruler flat response. I would try Shady's suggestion first as it doesn't cost anything to try different locations for the sub. You could always sell your Pio and get a receiver with Audyssey MultEQ or above. Then of course, acoustic treatments and/or an external EQ like the Antimode 8033 or MiniDSP (less expensive) are options.

Not many subs have as flat a FR as the SVS subs, however the Hsu subs also have a very flat FR, and you wouldn't notice the difference in FR between the two. I doubt the SVS is more detailed. The VTF3 will probably play louder and will certainly go deeper. The only reason to go for the SVS sub that I can see is its better warranty, but you can buy an extended warranty for Hsu subs, although I wouldn't even worry about that as the Hsus are very reliable.

Thank you for your reply. It looks like I will be going with the Hsu VTF3.4. Another question before I buy, will this pressurize a 13 x 14 x 11 room well enough?

should pressurize that room just fine, you can get away with a vtf2 in that small of a room, my vtf2 is in a larger room than that and I can't turn it past 1/2 way up without the house shaking everywhere... 11 foot ceilings are high..

Thanks for all the replies. I just have a quick question, as far as the port noise go, will the VTF3.4 have alot less port noise than the VTF 2.4 or would I not hear much difference in my 13 x 13 x 11 room?

If the port noise isnt much different, I am pretty much sold on the VTF 2.4. Also, my main concern is tightness of bass over a "rumble" sort of speak. If the VTF 2.4 and the 3.4 isnt much different as far as these to go within my room size, I am definately getting a VTF 2.4.

The VTF3 will have less port noise due to its larger 4" ports. Port noise can be easily reduced on either model by running them with both ports open, and would only be present at high output in deep frequencies. I wouldn't worry about it. As far as sound quality goes, they should be nearly the same.
