i just ugraded to the boston center 920 from the 910. i have a yamaha 7.1 5960 reciever. currently i have axiom qs8 surrouds. my question is I cant hook up my old center VR 910 as a back center behind me in between my axioms can I? i think that if i hook up my old 910 directly behind me to one of the channels for the 7.1 I will be getting sound from directly behind me that should be coming out of the channel that is designed to produce sound from the left or right? if the yamaha was a 6.1 then i could put it behind. interested in your thoughts?

Correct

If your receiver is set to 7.1, and you have the speakers arranged as 6.1, well, pick the left or right channel and that is what you will hear from behind. I wonder if there are receivers that would down mix 7.1 or up mix 5.1 for some sort of phantom channel. Even though that is outside of industry specs.

Whether it enhances the listening experience... Who knows. I personally would stick with 5.1 and splash for a 7.1 setup when funds allow.

BTW, you could post the extra center in the classifieds for either purchase or trade. I am figuring that you already thought of that though...

i know that i can hook up the center to one of the empty channels, for example if i have the back LS (left side) hooked up to the axiom surround and back RS hooked up to the axiom surround and i take the empty LB (left back) and hook it up to the center and put it directly behind me my thought is that lets say during a movie there is a gun shot that is happening on center of the screen and it it is shot like it is moving out of the screen and to your left behind you. the channel that should be producing that bullet is now hooked up behind me, wont that screw up the sound stage?

No, there is no discrete L/R rear information yet. Currently, those channels are receiving the same info. So go ahead and add the back channel for 6.1 and make sure your speaker setup is correct in the receiver.

so you are saying that in a 6.1 setup the rear center would get the same sound as the right and left channel surround???so it will be fine to take one of the empty left back or right back channels in the 7.1 receiver and place it in the center behind me and make it a 6.1?.

If you have a 7.1 receiver and want to configure it for 6.1 usually you use the Surround Rear Left terminal and that is usually specified in the manual.

You tell the receiver you are configured for 6.1 the same way you tell it 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 5.1, etc - by setting the speakers to Yes or On (whatever terminology the receiver uses).

You'd set Front Left, Center, Front Right, Surround Left, Surround Right, and Surround Rear Left to On/Yes and you're all set.
