$500-800 Sub REcommendation!

I'm new to the game and could use some help. I'm setting up a home theater primarily for watching DVDs and playing video games, more games than DVDs though. I need a subwoofer and I was looking to spend $500-$800 on it, although if there is something in the $900-$1000 range that is light years ahead of the $800 range, I might swing it.

Could you please help me out with any recommendations? I'm a total dunce to the subject matter.
