Hi folks,

I want to buy a new TV in 2 months and I'd like to receive some advice from everyone.

What is a good affordable 50" TV with high quality, support HD and good features.

Thanks
Mark

I am in the same boat. I am looking for the best bang for my buck for all around tv and video game playing. Leaning strongly towards dlp or projectors

Yeh, look at LCD projection or DLP. They're relatively well priced for their size compared to other types, they have good picture/features, and you will never, ever burn an image into the screen (big for you game players). My next tv is going to be DLP.

Quite alot of people seem to be suffering from video game lag on rear projection hdtv's, particularly DLP style TV's. Samsungs newest line has a "Game Mode" on it that is supposed to turn off non-essential components and programs and allow the game signal to pass through faster...that is why I am leaning to the DL-S4666W myself.

The older Sammy's supposedly have quite noticable lag that makes game playing impossible.

LCD flat panels image, to me, sucks for gaming. I always see a ghosting/smear effect on the screen with fast moving colors and that just turns me off of the LCD's for gaming.

With the Xbox360 and PS3, supposedly, the the rear-proj TV's, since it is a higher native resolution signal, aren't supposed to experience lag nearly as bad. I don't have a 360 and will hopefully be testing my own PS3 on my new HDTV in December. :D

No ghosting issues while the kids play Xbox 360 on our 50' Pioneer plasma. Perfect picture.

I have a Samsung HL-R5067 50" DLP and don't experience any lag with my regular xbox, or my xbox 360, but I have my Yamaha RX-V1600 receiver controling the audio delay, so that may be why I don't notice it if there is any lag. But that tv looks incredible with HD content, and looks good with regualr tv and dvd's. You can find it for a pretty good price now at Amazon.com or at onecall.com

They're not talking about audio lag, they're talking overall lag. If what you're seeing is delayed, then gaming becomes quite a challenge, when your input to the controller is half a second or so behind what you're seeing on the screen. I wouldn't want to do it.

As for the TVs that do it.. I hear a lot of complaints about Samsung TVs.. are they the main culprits in this? As a gamer, should I avoid Samsung and go with another manufacturer for DLP?

I see... well I have no video lag on my xbox, or xbox 360, or anything else for that matter. If you were going DLP, I would stick with Samsung, as they make the best DLP sets. What model were you considering?

Me? Not a clue. Probably something inexpensive (note I didn't use the word "cheap".. there's a difference.. hehe). So far, my entertainment system is under $1000, with what I'd call "mid-grade" equipment. Stuff that's not bottom-of-the-barrel, but not top-of-the-line, either. Most of it's Sony, now that I think about it (DVD player and receiver, anyway). I'm also one of those people who doesn't like to "waste" things.. I find it difficult to get myself to buy a new TV when my old one works so well. I don't buy new things until the old one dies, and that may be a while for Ye Olde Tyme Sanyo.. it's still going quite strong. There's also the money thing.. I'm not a rich man by any stretch, and saving up a couple grand to drop on a television (especially when I don't really "need" it) isn't as easy as it sounds. Which is one reason I'm aiming for DLP, is the "most bang for the buck", especially in terms of screen size versus cost. CRTs are too small, Plasmas and LCDs are too expensive.. Projection is right down the middle.

It'll probably be a year or so before I buy one, depending on how things for for me in the meantime, and the selection will be a bit different by then, what with the 1080p displays coming along, new technologies like OLED and SED, etc. With any luck, all this new stuff will bring down the prices of the "old" stuff. :)
