5 Favorite Obscure Rock/Pop/Rap Songs

The purpose of this thread is to discover new music from other members that you may not be familiar with. I’m always willing to listen to something new and now with the likes of iTunes, Napster, and others, it’s easy to download one song and give it a listen. Let’s keep this to just Rock/Pop/Rap and if someone else wants to start a thread for other genres go for it. Try and post the song title, artist, and album if you know it. Here are my 5:

1. Slow Emotion Replay, The The, Dusk. I only have one of their CD’s and this song is terrific.
2. Born of Frustration, James, Seven. The lead singer has a powerful voice.
3. Sense, The Lightning Seeds, Sense. My favorite pop tune of the 90’s. I use this song a lot with DVD slide shows and people always ask me who the artist is.
4. Miss Sarajevo, U2, The Best of 1990-2000. I’m a huge U2 fan but had never heard this song until this compilation came out. Yes that’s Luciano Pavarotti in the middle of the song.
5. Short Skirt/Long Jacket, Cake, Comfort Eagle. These funk/rap/cowboys from Sacramento have some wild lyrics like “fingernails that shine like justice”. This song got a fair amount of air play in Sacramento a couple of years ago but I’m not sure how much airplay it received in other markets so that’s why I’ve included it.

I don't know if these are obscure, but perhaps they are unknown to some here:

1. Hip-Hop/Rap: Kool Moo Dee - Knowledge is King

2. Pop: Jun Shibata - 隣の部屋 (First song I ever heard from her, and probably still my favorite)

I don't know if this is obscure or just a guilty pleasure but Alone by Lisa Loeb is a pretty cool song I found flipping through the albums on my server.

Also fond of Evanescence's Haunted. It makes an excellent test for subwoofer control and tightness.

When I want something heavier, Black Label Society - Suicide Messiah or Devil Driver - Driving Down the Darkness. Discovered these thanks to my kid.

If it's just for some rockin' guitar, I'll go with something like Surfing with the Alien by Joe Satriani.

Rap: "Stick 'em Up" by Quarashi (it's not thug style, they're from Iceland, but it's an awsome track.

Rap: (Old school) "Freaks of the Industry" Digital Underground - album is Sex Packets

Rock: "Note Quite Sonic" by I Mother Earth - easily one of the best driving songs ever.
Rock: "Voodoo Lady" by LIVE album is Distance to Here
Rock: "White Discussion" by LIVE album Throwing Copper
(These two discs I could never be with out. If you haven't ever really sat and listened to them, you're really really missing out)

Pop: "Like Flames" Berlin

Zero 7 - In The Waiting Line.

Coldplay - Yes

Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Follow You Into The Dark.

Joshua Radin - Winter

Muse - Hysteria.

Muse - Apocalypse Please

People In Planes - Light For The Deadvine.

Just a few that I like. Muse's album "Absolution" is full of awesome songs, and I highly recommend it (It's their older album).

I never realized how old this thread was. It's been on the boards as long as I have!

 Good catch! I didn't notice that the first post was so long ago, either.
Me neither. But then again it's not a post by somebody that disappeared two years ago either. I see Duffinator around enough that I wouldn't think to check the date on his post.

That and the fact that topics like music are not affected by time. :)
