Two channel audio is two channel audio. If it was recorded as two channel, then any surround processor effects is merely to emulate arenas or clubs to a certain extent and is nothing approaching a true surround mix.

If you have a recording that is recorded in surround - that is, it is either picked up with mics from a live show, or is mixed in the studio as a surround mix such as you will find on DVD-A, then that's going to be true surround.

A 2 ch recording can certainly have a mono signal in its left and right channels, same exact signal. A processor would send this to the center speaker only, and all the other such signals. The the left and right signals out of phase by ex amount would be processed in the rear channels.

There should be some material about this on Google perhaps if you query Dolby pro logic, or, something about the Shure processor of yesteryear.
